World No. 8 Petra Kvitova and former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic will meet in the fourth round of the Sony Open in Miami on Monday afternoon. The Ivanovic vs Kvitova Head-to-Head series stands at 4-2, yet Kvitova has won two of the last three meetings.
Ivanovic extended her undefeated streak to 5-0 against the resurgent Italian Flavia Pennetta, defeating her 6-4, 6-3 in 77 minutes. While Pennetta started strong by breaking to lead 3-1, she was unable to maintain that pace and only managed to win four more games in the entire match.
“Flavia has been playing some really good tennis lately. She’s really on top of her form,” Ivanovic said afterwards. “I expected a tough match today, and I’m really happy the way I played, especially at the end of the first set and in the beginning of the second set. I’m really happy to get this victory today.”
It was a fantastic performance from Ivanovic, who slowed down after a strong start to her season, where she won the Auckland Open before reaching the quarter-final of the Australian Open. She will now look for another upset victory in the fourth round, this time over Czech No. 1 Petra Kvitova.
“Australia was such a great trip for me, but I didn’t really stop after that. I didn’t get a break, I was a little bit injured, I didn’t have time to go home – just a few things going on, and I think I needed a break. It’s all about big picture though, and I’m feeling really good about my game right now.”
Eighth seed Petra Kvitova defeated Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic, 6-3 6-4. The Czech No. 1 struck 10 aces and won 74% of her first serve points and was only 1% less accurate on her second serves.
This marks the seventh time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Ivanovic leading the head-to-head series 4-2. While Ivanovic holds the overall lead, Kvitova has won two of the last three meetings, including their most recent meeting at the 2013 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Kvitova is yet to get a firm grip on her 2014 season and will need her A-game to beat the currently in form Ivanovic. This could potentially be a tight three set encounter, with the more determined athlete earning a hard fought victory.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
