An intriguing first round encounter between budding talent Dominic Thiem and the Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol is scheduled to take place in the opening round of the Sony Open. Both competitors have had strong starts to their respective seasons and will be looking to carry that momentum forward here in Miami.
Dominic Thiem defeated both Rhyne Williams and Peter Polansky to reach the main draw of the Miami Masters on Tuesday afternoon. The 20-year-old has now successfully qualified for the event on five of six occasions and will be looking for a career best performance in 2014. He has already risen from No. 139 to No. 86 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and will be looking to continue that upward climb, starting with a strong performance against crafty veteran Lukas Rosol.
Lukas Rosol reached the second round of the BNP Paribas Open last week, losing to British No. 1 Andy Murray in three sets. Following his stay in the California Desert, Rosol arrived in Dallas, where he won the Irving ATP Challenger event. Now he will be looking for a strong showing at the second Masters event of the season, a tournament where he has never gotten past the third round.
This will be the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. It will likely be an entertaining and competitive encounter, filled with high-quality shot-making, particularly from Thiem, who has proven to be a future star in the making with his impressive wins this season.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem in Three Sets
