Top seed Li Na is through to the third round in Indian Wells following a quick victory over Zhenh Jie in her opening match. Her next task will be a first-time match-up against world No. 67 Karolina Pliskova, which should make for an entertaining match-up.
World No. 2 Li Na needed only 94 minutes to cruise past fellow Chinese athlete Zheng Jie in straight sets. The Australian Open champion defeated Zheng 6-1, 7-5 to even the head-to-head series between them to 3-3 and set up a third round encounter with Karolina Pliskova.
“[It’s the] first time to be the top seed in a big tournament,” said Li Na. “The first match is always tough, because you don’t know what will happen on the court. All you can do is try to do your best. If you cannot play good tennis, [the] only one way is to run for all the shots and to fight every point.”
World No. 67 Pliskova struck five aces past 28th seed Klara Zakopalova to earn a 7-5, 6-2 victory and a place in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. Having already reached a final this season in Pattaya City, Pliskova will be looking for the biggest victory in her career tomorrow afternoon against the top seed at the event.
This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. Li has has a strong start to her season and is more that capable of dispatching of Pliskova in straight sets.
Prediction: Li Na in Straight Sets
