Following commanding performances in their Monday match-ups, second seed Li Na and former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki are scheduled to take place in the Sony Open quarter-finals on Wednesday afternoon. The Na Li vs Wozniacki head-to-head series is poised at 3-2, yet they have not met on the professional tour in over two years.
After receiving a bye into the second round and a walkover into the third round, world No. 2 Li Na began her campaign in Miami with a straight sets victory over budding American Madison Keys and then followed up with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro. Li stormed to a seven game lead to start the match, before the No. 15 seed managed to win her first game. Carla would only manage another game and would ultimately lose in 61 minutes.
Next for Li is a rematch of the infamous 2011 Australian Open semi-final against Caroline Wozniacki. The Danish star held several match points during the contest, yet Li managed to recover and earn the victory.
“Yeah, I was match point down, right? I saved match point?” she recalled. “For sure it was not an easy match. But it’s already been a couple of years since I’ve played her, so I need some information. My coach was going to watch a few games of her match to get that information for me.”
Following her near-perfect performance against Sloane Stephens in the third round, world No. 18 Wozniacki once again took part in a rapid-fire contest, this time a 6-0, 6-1 over Varvara Lepchenko. Similar to her upcoming opponent, Wozniacki closed out the match in 61 minutes. The Dane will be hard pressed to topple the second seed, as she is 0-2 against World No. 1s and 1-7 against No. 2s.
This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Li leading the head-to-head series 3-2. Wozniacki won their last meeting in Tokyo over two years back, yet she will need her A-game if she is to repeat that feat on Wednesday.
Prediction: Li Na in Three Sets
