A fourth round encounter between top seed Li Na and unlikely opponent Aleksandra Wozniak is set to take place at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Na leads the head-to-head series 2-1, yet this marks their first meeting in almost four years.
While Li was troubled by Karolina Pliskova early in the opening set, she eventually outmuscled her to win the contest 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round in Indian Wells. However, she did hit nine double faults to her single ace, which was the low point of her performance.
“At least I could win the last point and stay in the tournament,” Li said afterwards. “If you’re a tennis player, you’ll make double faults. At least I can improve my serve even more from here. I’ll talk to Carlos after this, because I didn’t get a chance to talk to him yet, we didn’t have time to see each other. We will definitely talk about the serve and what I’m doing, and what we can improve moving forward.”
Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak reached the fourth round following a tough three set win over 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Wozniak served for the match at 6-5 in the second set but got broken and lost the set in a tiebreaker. She would rebound in the third set by dropping just four points in a 20-minute thrashing to bagel her opponent in the third set. She will now await the top seed in the fourth round of the tournament. She hold a 0-9 record against Top 4 competitors on the tour and will be looking to finally snap that streak.
This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. Li leads Wozniak in their head-to-head, 2-1, though they haven’t played in more than four years. Li should still hold a significant advantage over the Canadian following her momentous wins this season, yet it will be interesting to see if she will be the latest in a series of shocking upsets taking place this week.
Prediction: Li Na in Straight Sets
