Top Canadian female Eugenie Bouchard will meet 2nd-ranked Chinese player Shuai Peng in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. This marks the first time these two athletes meet on the WTA tour and should make for an entertaining contest.
Following her fantastic semi-final showing at the Australian Open, world No. 19 Bouchard followed up with two rapid-fire victories in the Fed Cup tie against Serbia. Since then, she lost in the opening round in Doha and in the qualifying round in Dubai, before salvaging her February with a quarter-final showing in Acapulco. While her recent performances on the tour have been far from her best, Canadian No. 1 Eugenie Bouchard is confident that she can regain focus this week in Indian Wells.
World No. 40 Shuai Peng began her 2014 season in fantastic fashion, reaching the finals in Shenzhen, where she lost to Li Na. The match-up was only the second ever all-Chinese final in the history of the WTA. Since then, Peng lost in the opening round in Hobart and Melbourne, before rebounding with a quarter-final showing in Pattaya City before succumbing in the second round in Doha to Lucie Safarova. Her opening round contest in Indian Wells will certainly be a tough task, as her opponent, Eugenie Bouchard, is currently in the best form of her career.
This marks the first time these two athletes meet on the WTA tour. Considering the extraordinary past six months that Bouchard has witnessed on tour, she will likely be a strong favourite for this match. Whether she manages to finish the match quickly, or ekes out a close three set battle, Bouchard will likely come out victorious.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Straight Sets
