Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens will meet for a fourth time on the WTA tour, as they clash in the third round of the Sony Open on Sunday afternoon. The world No. 18 is undefeated against the American, as she holds a 3-0 record in the head-to-head series.
Wozniacki appeared to be off to a strong start in 2014, with a semi-final showing in Dubai, yet she was unable to follow through and would lose to Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round at Indian Wells. Now in Miami, Wozniacki edged Monica Puig in three sets to set up another encounter with young American Sloane Stephens. The Dane hit 5 aces but not without coupling them with 7 double faults in the process. She also won 70% of her 1st serve points, and saved 8/11 breaks throughout the match.
World No. 16 Sloane Stephens advanced to the third round with a 6-5, 6-3 win over Zarina Diyas. It was far from her best performance, as the American hit 1 ace and managed 64% of her first serves, yet forfeited three breaks in the match before securing the victory. He win boosted her to a modest 7-4 record this season and she will be looking to add to the win column this week in Miami.
Wozniacki has won all three of their previous encounters on the professional tour, including a 6-3, 6-1 win in Beijing last fall. While Wozniacki is not playing her best tennis so far this year, Stephens has never managed a set against the Dane and it is unlikely she will achieve that tomorrow afternoon with her own standard of play as of late. The world No. 18 should win this in straight sets.
Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki in Straight Sets
