Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska reached the fourth round in Indian Wells following a dominant double bagel performance on Sunday evening. She will now meet French No. 1 Alize Cornet for the third time on the professional tour, where they will vie for a spot in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open. The Radwanska vs Cornet Head to Head stands at 2-0.
Radwanska earned the third bagel win of her professional career last night in Indian Wells, defeating Annika Beck 6-0, 6-0 in 67 minutes. While several of those game were close, competitive ones, Radwanska won them all and stormed into the fourth round, where she will now meet Alize Cornet, whom she met in the finals of the Hopman Cup earlier this season.
French No. 1 Alize Cornet needed almost three-and-a-half hours to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-3. It was the second longest WTA match this season so far, with Cornet fighting off triple match point serving 4-5, 0-40 down in the second set to force a decider. She would eventually take an early break in the third set and secure a 6-3 victory in the decider to set up the meeting with the second seed.
“I don’t know how I won this match,” Cornet said. “The good thing when you are tired is you don’t ask too many questions, you just hit the ball. That’s better for me.”
This marks the third time the two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Radwanska remaining undefeated with a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series. While their last WTA meeting took place in 2009, they recently met at the Hopman’s Cup this year, where Radwanska was also victorious in three entertaining sets. The Pole will likely hold the advantage once again in this contest, yet the resilience that Cornet displaced against Suarez Navarro was impressive and could prove to be troublesome for Radwanska.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska in Three Sets
