An intriguing quarter-final contest takes place on Friday between towering competitors Tomas Berdych and Jerzy Janowicz. This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the Czech No. 1 leading the head-to-head series with a perfect 2-0. Both matches were tough, gruelling three set contests and this will likely be the same sort of affair.
Following a comfortable second round victory over Nicholas Mahut, world No. 7 Tomas Berdych has now set up a quarter-final clash with Jerzy Janowicz. Berdych defeated the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3, hitting 10 aces and saving all four break points he faced, in one hour and 12 minutes. The Czech No. 1 has stated in earlier press conferences that Wawrinka’s Australian Open victory motivated him to work on his game in order to attempt to win a Grand Slam title and he will be looking to prove that to himself this week by setting up clashes with either Juan Martin del Potro or Andy Murray in the Rotterdam Open.
Janowicz also had a comfortable performance in his second round match on Thursday, where he defeated German No. 1 Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-final stage. The Polish star hit an imposing 18 aces and won 80% of his first service points in his victory over Haas. He also did not face a single break point throughout the match, which lasted 81 minutes. This is certainly Janowicz’s strongest showing this season so far and he will be looking to maintain that momentum when he meets Top 10 competitor Tomas Berdych.
This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Berdych leading the series 2-0. Both contests took place last season, with one on clay courts, while the other took place on the indoor courts in Marseille. Both contests were close, three set affairs and this will likely be no different as both athletes appear to be fresh and motivated to perform in Rotterdam.
Prediction: Tomas Berdych in Three Sets
