A first round encounter is set to take place at the Dubai Duty Fre Tennis Championships between reigning Doha champion Simona Halep and top French athlete Alize Cornet. The two competitors split their two previous encounters, and will be looking to take the lead in the series on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round. Check out the Halep v Cornet Head to Head.
Romania’s Simona Halep arrives in Dubai on the heels of a fantastic week in Doha, where Halep picked up upset wins over Sara Errani, Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber to raise the trophy on Sunday. It was the world No. 10’s biggest career achievement to date and a testament to her extraordinary improvements over the past 12 months. Next for Halep is an encounter with the French No. 1, who previously defeated her back in 2011.
World No. 26 Alize Cornet had a tough week in Doha, where she lost in the opening round to 47th-ranked Stefanie Voegele. Prior to that, the French No. 1 had reached the third round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Paris. Part of her reason for exiting Doha early was due to her playing the Fed Cup tie in France the week prior, where she went 1-1, losing to Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
With the head-to-head series tied at 1-1, Halep will be looking to take the lead in the series with a victory in the opening round in Dubai. She holds the most recent victory over Cornet, a straight sets victory in the round robin stage in Sofia and will certainly be the favorite on Tuesday afternoon. If the Romanian continues to perform at her current standard, it will be interesting to see who is capable of stopping her.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Straight Sets
