On Thursday afternoon, the Women’s Tennis Association announced that world No. 1 Serena Williams has accepted a wildcard into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships next week. The American withdrew from this week’s Qatar Total Open 2014 with a back injury but had decided to return to action for next week’s event.
“There is no greater player in the world today than Serena Williams, and although she has reached an age when many players would be thinking of retiring, her career is going from strength to strength,” Dubai Duty Free’s Colm McLoughlin said. “Last year she won an astonishing 34 consecutive matches, the longest winning streak of her career and the second longest of any player this century.”
Williams started the year off in typical fashion, winning her 58th WTA title in Brisbane, but would suffer another injury at the Australian Open, eventually losing to Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round. Last week, she withdrew from Doha with the bad back.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships takes place between February 17-22.
