Errani Sara Errani vs Alize Cornet Preview – WTA Paris Open SF

Sara Errani and Alize Cornet will clash for the fifth time on the professional tour, in the second of the two semi-final match-up at the GDF Suez Open in Paris. The world No. 7 leads the head-to-head series 3-1.

Italian No. 1 Sara Errani cruised into the semi-finals with two strong showings over Karin Knapp and Elina Svitolina. In her quarter-final match, she served at 88% for the match and won 61% of points behind her first serve, converting five of the seven break-point chances she created. Her shorter matches and brisk performances may be the difference heading into her semi-final contest tomorrow, as her opponents has had to battle through three tough matches to reach the same stage of the event.

World No. 24 Alize Cornet began her week in Paris with a three-set victory over Magdalena Rybarikova to arrive in the second round of the tournament. Prior to that, Cornet has reached the third round of the Australian Open, defeating Polona Hercog and Camila Giorgi before losing to world No. 5 Maria Sharapova in the following round. Cornet was supposed to meet Petra Kvitova in the second round in Paris, but the Czech No. 6 withdrew from the event citing respiratory issues, leaving her to face lucky-loser Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who she defeated in three sets.

Cornet arrived at her quarter-final contest against Andrea Petkovic, leading the head-to-head series 2-1. The two competitors stayed on serve throughout the opening set, reaching an eventual tiebreaker, which Cornet won 8-6, after initially falling 3-0. She lead the second set with a double break before Petkovic recovered 7-5 to send the match to a decider. Several breaks later, Cornet raised her hands in victory and advanced her h2h record against Petkovic to 3-1.

The two competitors will meet for a fifth time on the professional tour, with Errani leading the head-to-head series 3-1. The Italian No. 1 has won the last three consecutive matches between them, losing only in a 2008 clay court encounter. If she comes in top form tomorrow afternoon, she should manage to secure another victory and reach her first final of the season.

Prediction: Sara Errani in Three Sets
