Gasquet ATP Richard Gasquet vs Ernests Gulbis Preview ATP Marseille 2014 SF

French No. 1 Richard Gasquet is through to the semi-final of the Open 13, where he will meet world No. 23 Ernests Gulbis for a spot in the final. This marks the third time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Gasquet leading the head-to-head series with 2-0.

Gasquet cruised past Ivan Dodig in straight sets on Friday afternoon to reach the semi-final in Marseille. The world No. 9 hit 3 aces and managed three break points to score the 7-5, 6-3 victory in one hour and 23 minutes. It is Gasquet’s second semi-final of the season, having finished runner-up to Gael Monfils in Montpellier two weeks ago. He will be looking to improve upon that score and lift his fourth ATP World Tour title on French soil, starting with a victory over Latvian No. 1 Ernests Gulbis in the semi-final.

World No. 23 Ernests Gulbis also advanced to the semi-final stage in Marseille with a straight sets victory over Nicholas Mahut. Gulbis hit 9 aces, won 92% of his points on first serve and faced no break points in his 6-3, 7-6(1) victory. The contest lasted a total of 80 minutes. The Latvian No. 1 has now reached his second ATP World Tour semi-final this season, having reached the semis in Rotterdam before losing to Tomas Berdych. He also reached the quarter-finals in Doha at the start of the season but was halted by world No. 1 Rafael Nadal before he could progress further in the tournament. He will be looking to reach his first final of the season as well as to pick up his second victory over a Top 10 competitors, after his upset win over Juan Martin del Potro in Rotterdam.

This marks the third time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Gasquet leading the head-to-head series with an undefeated 2-0. The first contest at the Rome Masters on clay needed three sets, yet their second encounter at the Shanghai Masters on hard court was a quicker affair. Gasquet appears to be the stronger of the two on the hard court surface and will be looking to extend his undefeated streak against Gulbis to 3-0.
