After withdrawing from the Paris Open due to respiratory issues, world No. 6 Petra Kvitova has revealed that she will not be taking part in the season-opening Fed Cup tie against Spain this month. The Czech No. 1 cited a virus that will keep her out of action for the next few weeks.
Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova was called upon as Kvitova’s replacement for the event. Lucie Safarova, Klara Zakopalova and Andrea Hlavackova make up the remaining members of the team.
The Czech team, who championed the event in both 2011 and 2012, last met the Spanish team in 2009, an encounter which they won 4-1. The Spanish team will feature world No. 16 Carla Suarez Navarro, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, Silvia Soler-Espionsa and Lara Arruabarrena.
The Fed Cup tie takes place between February 8-9 on an outdoor clay court in Seville, Spain.
