dimitrov24 Grigor Dimitrov vs Marinko Matosevic Preview ATP Acapulco 1R

An opening round contest between budding talent Grigor Dimitrov and Australia’s Marinko Matosevic takes place tomorrow afternoon at the ATP Acapulco event in Mexico. This marks the first time the two will meet on the professional circuit and will likely make for an entertaining contest.

Bulgarian No. 1 Grigor Dimitrov has had an interesting start to his 2014 season. After losing in the second round in Brisbane to Marin Cilic, Dimitrov rebounded with a fantastic performance at the Australian Open, where he reached his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final, before exiting to eventual runner-up Rafael Nadal. Since then he lost another second round contest, this time to Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in Rotterdam. Having dropped two places to world No. 22, Dimitrov will be looking to add new ranking points to his tally and rise back into the ATP Top 20, where he recently debuted.

World No. 71 Marinko Matosevic is coming off a quarter-final exit in last week’s Delray Beach Open, where he lost to eventual runner-up Kevin Anderson. Prior to that he had suffered back-to-back first round exits in Melbourne and in Memphis but has managed to rebound in Delray Beach to gain a winning 6-5 record this season. Having snapped his string of first-round exits, Matosevic will be looking for an upset victory over rising star Grigor Dimitrov to advance to the second stage in Acapulco.

This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. Dimitrov has certainly been the more consistent player between them, as he has continued his upward trend into the Top 25 in the world and will likely add to his six wins this season with a strong victory over Matosevic.

Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov in Straight Sets
