Juan Marin del Potro has officially withdrawn from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, after suffering a left wrist injury that hindered his performance in his opening round match-up. The second-seed retired after dropping the first set tiebreak 7-6(3), after holding three set points the game before.
Fighting back tears during the post-match press conference, Del Potro explained that his injury feels similar to the one that sidelined him for the majority of the season four years ago and is hindering his performances on court.
‘I don’t feel really well,” he said. ”My wrist is hurting a lot and everybody knows what happened to me four years ago with my other wrist. It was really tough to play today. I tried everything. I cannot be the player I would like to be.”
Del Potro will now return to the Mayo Clinic for another consultation, after making a stop there following the Australian Open. During his initial consultation at the clinic, del Potro was recommended a course of physical therapy, which has clearly not entirely solved the issue.
