Following straight set victories in their semi-final contests, Top 10 competitors Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep will meet on Sunday afternoon for the Qatar Open title. Halep and Kerber have only previously met on the tour on one occasion: a 2009 encounter at the $50,000 Saint Raphael, which Halep won in a close three set battle. Check out the Kerber v Halep Head to Head.
After defeating three consecutive Czech competitors in Pliskova, Zakapolova and Cetkovska, world No. 9 Angelique Kerber toppled top Serbian star Jelena Jankovic in straight sets to arrive at the Qatar Total Open 2014 final. The German stormed through the opening set 6-1, but Jankovic regained focus and forced a second set tiebreak before eventually losing a close decider 8-6. It was a strong performance from Kerber, who hit 12 winners and only four unforced errors during the match.
“She was playing great at the end,” Kerber said. “I think it was very high level at the end of the second set, and, you know, I was just trying to play aggressive in the important moments and stay in the moment and just fighting from point to point. I was just happy that I won this in two sets at the end.”
World No. 10 Simona Halep reached the biggest final of her career, when she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals of the Qatar Total Open on Saturday. The Polish No. 1 appeared to be in total control of the match early on, as she raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set, but in one fell swoop, Halep won eight consecutive games to go up 7-5 3-0 and dominated the encounter from then on.
Halep defeated Kerber in the pair’s only previous meeting, and while that may be the case, the contest was five years ago at an ITF Women’s Circuit event. At the time Kerber was ranked No.95 at the time and Halep No.228 – they are now No.9 and No.10, respectively, signalling an entirely different match-up for tomorrow afternoon.
