Ana Ivanovic WTA Tennis

After a strong week in Doha, world No. 9 Angelique Kerber has arrived in Dubai, where she will cross paths with Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic in an entertaining encounter. This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Ivanovic leading the head-to-head series 3-2.

The German No. 1 is coming off a fantastic showing all week at the Qatar Total Open 2014, where she defeated Czech players Pliskova, Zakapolova, Cetkovska, as well as top Serbian star Jelena Jankovic – all without dropping a set. She would eventually lose in the final to Romania’s Simona Halep, who defeated her third consecutive Top 10 player en route to the biggest title of her career. Now Kerber will be looking to get back to her winning ways, starting with the Serbian No. 2 in the opening round in Dubai.

While her week in Doha was cut short following a second round loss to Klara Zakopalova, world No. 12 Ana Ivanovic is currently taking part in one of her best seasons in some time. The Belgrade native began her season with a title win in Auckland, defeating Venus Williams in the final. She followed it up with a quarter-final showing at the Australian Open, where she surprised many by upsetting top seed Serena Williams in the fourth round before losing to Eugenie Bouchard in the final eight of the tournament.

While Ivanovic leads the head-to-head series 3-2, Kerber holds victories in their two recent encounters on the tour: Linz and Tokyo in 2013. Two of Ivanovic’s wins took place on clay court, while Kerber leads 2-1 in hard court encounters. The Serb won both her clay court encounters in 2013, yet her hard court victory over Kerber took place in 2006, whilst Kerber’s both took place last season, giving her the advantage in Dubai tomorrow.
