An interesting first round encounter between Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova takes place tomorrow afternoon at the Qatar Total Open 2014. This marks the eighth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Ivanovic leading the head-to-head series 5-2.
World No. 12 Ana Ivanovic has had a magnificent start to her 2014 season. The Serbian No. 2 began the year in Auckland, where she defeated Venus Williams to win the title, and followed up in Melbourne, where she defeated Samantha Stosur and upset top seed Serena Williams to reach the quarter-final before losing to Eugenie Bouchard. She has already risen several spots in the rankings to No. 12 and will be looking to return to the Top 10 over the next few months. The 26-year old hopes to continue her strong performances this season with good start against Hantuchova, whom she holds a solid record against.
World No. 30 Daniela Hantuchova lost in the opening round of her first two tournaments of the season in Brisbane and Sydney, but would later reach the third round in Melbourne before losing to Serena Williams. She would lose to another Top 5 competitor in Maria Sharapova in Paris and then again to Angelique Kerber in the Fed Cup tie. She will look to gain her first win four attempts on Tuesday afternoon when she faces Ana Ivanovic for a spot in the second round.
This marks the eighth time these two competitors will meet on the tour, with Ivanovic leading the head-to-head series 5-2. She is also 4-0 against Hantuchova on hard courts, which will factor into the match-up tomorrow afternoon. The last time they met on the tour was in 2012, which adds to the intrigue for tomorrow’s match-up. Ivanovic should win this contest handily if she performs at the levels she has sustained throughout the early portion of 2014.
