Radwanska2 Agnieszka Radwanska vs Simona Halep – WTA Qatar Open (Doha) SF

The second semi-final at the Qatar Total Open 2014 will feature two of the craftiest competitors on the WTA tour in world No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep. This marks the fifth time these athletes will cross paths on the tour, with Radwanska leading the head-to-head series 3-1.

Second-seeded Radwanska dropped just three games in her straight sets victory over Yanina Wickmayer. The Polish No.1, who was in top form on Friday, needed only 64 minutes of court-time to earn the 6-2, 6-1 victory. Next for Radwanska is another crafty player in Simona Halep, who also made quick work of her quarter-final contest.

“I’ve played Simona a few times, the last time in Rome on clay, so the conditions will be a bit different this time,” Radwanska said. “But she had a really great season last year, having some good results, and I saw her playing a couple of matches here as well. Today she was playing unbelievable. It’s for sure going to be a tough match, but it’s a semifinal, and everyone’s playing well.”

World No. 10 Simona Halep had arguably the tougher quarter-final contest, but one would not have considered this to be the case when she breezed past fourth seed Sara Errani 6-2, 6-0 to arrive at her first semi-final of the season. Following her first round loss in Paris, Halep recovered impressively this week in Doha, yet she appears to be suffering an achilles injury that is hampering her performance.

“It was a difficult match. I couldn’t prepare very well because I’m not 100% – I have an injury – and I can’t run very well on the court,” Halep said. “But I was very strong mentally and just wanted to focus on every point. She’s a great player and comes back very well and runs very well, so I knew it was important to just stay aggressive and finish the points, and the match, as soon as I could.”

Radwanska leads Halep in their head-to-head series, 3-1, yet Halep holds the victory in their most recent encounter in Rome. While that may be the case, the condition are entirely different in Doha and they should favour the Polish No. 1, who will steal the match in a tough, yet entertaiing three set battle.
