A second round contest between world No. 6 Petra Kvitova and France’s Alize Cornet is set to take place at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris. The two competitors have previously met on two occasions, but only once on the professional tour, bringing the head-to-head record to 1-0 favouring Kvitova, who will be looking to extend that lead tomorrow afternoon.
The tournament’s second seed behind Maria Sharapova, Kvitova arrived in Paris looking to regain some momentum after a turbulent start to her season. The world No. 6 began her season in Sydney, where she lost in the semi-final to eventual champion Tsvetana Pironkova. She followed up with a shocking first-round exit to world No. 88 Luksika Kumkhum at the Australian Open.
The Czech star will be looking to replicate her performance at this event from three years back, when she lifted the trophy after defeating Kim Clijsters in the tournament final.
World No. 24 Alize Cornet began her week in Paris with a three-set victory over Magdalena Rybarikova to arrive in the second round of the tournament. Prior to that, Cornet has reached the third round of the Australian Open, defeating Polona Hercog and Camila Giorgi before losing to world No. 5 Maria Sharapova in the following round. She will now be looking to top her best performance in Paris, when she reached the quarter-final stage in 2009, starting with an upset victory over Kvitova.
While the head-to-head record officially stands at 1-0 for Kvitova, with the considered encounter taking place at the 2012 US Open, which Kvitova won in straight sets, the two also met at the start of the season at the Hopman Cup in Perth. While Cornet managed to snatch the second set to force a decider, ultimately Kvitova was too much to handle, as she continued her unbeaten streak at the event this year. The French native will likely manage to do a similar act tomorrow afternoon, but it is unlikely she will manage more than a single set during the match.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova in Three Sets
