Former world No. 1 Martina Navratilova has made public her belief that current top star Serena Williams is more than capable of surpassing 20 Grand Slam singles titles in her career if she continues to play within her current form.
The American currently holds 17 Grand Slam titles and is now just one Slam away from tying Navratilova’s haul of 18. The Open Era record-holder is Steffi Graf, who managed 22 titles throughout her career. Margaret Court holds the all-time record with 24.
“If she can stay healthy there is no doubt she can go into the 20s,” Navratilova said while in Adelaide. “The sky is the limit. I know how hard it is once you get to 30, all those little niggling injuries get worse and it’s much easier to have an off day. Yet she seems to be playing her best tennis right now.”
Age is certainly factors into Martina’s opinion, as she believes that Serena is fresher at her age than competitors such as herself and Chris Everts were during the 1980s, as they had to play twice the number of tournaments.
“At age 30, she had played about half the tournaments than I had played at 30, so she is fresh in tennis terms. But still, she is in her 30s… she is eager and winning is very contagious. Once you get really used to it, you don’t want to let go of it.”
Serena Williams will is scheduled to meet Australian wildcard Ashleigh Barty in the opening round of the Australian Open.
