It was revealed yesterday that Germany’s Sabine Lisicki was forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International tournament, citing a gastrointestinal illness. The world no. 15 was scheduled to meet Swiss Stefanie Voegele in the second round on Wednesday, but was inclined to withdraw from the event.
The withdrawal is disappointing considering her strong start to the season, as she beat Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-4 in the opening-round clash. She is hoping that she will still manage to compete at the Australian Open in two weeks.
The top German athlete was not the only withdrawal as Pavlyuchenkova, who was a finalist in Brisbane last year, also retried from her match against Angelique Kerber with a left thigh injury. Several days prior to that, Aussie teenager Ashleigh Barty and former No. 1 Carline Wozniacki pulled out of the event for varying reasons. The Aussie suffered a left adductor tear while Wozniacki hurt her shoulder preparing for the event.
