2011 Paris Open champion Petra Kvitova has been forced to withdraw from the GDF Suez Open today. citing respiratory problems. The Czech No. 1 withdrew ahead of her second round match-up with France’s Alize Cornet.
Cornet will now face Kvitova’s compatriot, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 74th in the WTA rankings.
The world No. 6 began her season in Sydney, where she lost in the semi-final to eventual champion Tsvetana Pironkova. She followed up with a shocking first-round exit to world No. 88 Luksika Kumkhum at the Australian Open. She was looking to regain her footing in Paris this week, before she began suffering from her respiratory issues.
“I was absolutely intent on playing today but I had to see my doctor as I wasn’t feeling well,” Kvitova said. “I’ve got a sore throat and after practising this morning I realised that after 10 minutes I wasn’t able to breathe so unfortunately I was forced to withdraw.”
