An interesting second round encounter between Kaia Kanepi and Angelique Kerber takes place tomorrow afternoon at the Sydney International. The two have previously met on three occasions with Kanepi leading the h2h series 2-1.
Kanepi is coming off a strong week, where she reached the quarter-final in Brisbane before succumbing to Russian superstar Maria Sharapova in straight sets. Now in Sydney, she won her opening round match against budding American talent Victoria Duval, 6-1, 6-3. With a week to go before the Australian Open, the top Estonian will be looking to garner as much momentum as possible heading into the event but faces a tough obstacle in Germany’s Angelique Kerber. While she holds the winning record over Kerber, she was unable to win more than four games in the entire match.
Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber earned a hard-fought victory over Dominika Cibulkova in her opening round match to reach the second round of the Sydney International. The German played a tight opening set, where she needed a tiebreak snatch the lead before breaking ahead and serving out the match 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 on her third match point. The world no. 9 is hoping to continue her winning ways in her final warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open.
This is the second time the two competitors will meet at the Sydney International, with their first encounter taking place in 2009, with Kanepi leaving victorious. Since then, the two have met twice in 2013, both Grand Slam events (Wimbledon and US Open), where they split the wins to bring the overall head-to-head to 2-1 in Kanepi’s favour. The Estonian’s win over Kerber was five years back and will likely not factor into tomorrow match-up but it will be intriguing to see if Kanepi will be able to follow up on her strong showings last week in Brisbane.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber in Straight Sets
