It appears that the top four Italian players will not be taking part in the upcoming Fed Cup tie against the USA. The Italian Tennis Federation revealed in a statement that Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci, Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone asked to skip the tie, which takes place between February 8-9.
The reason behind the top four players’ withdrawals is their hectic schedule over the next 2-3 weeks, which spans to a tournament in Paris, then Cleveland, then to another tournament in Qatar before the Fed Cup tie against the USA.
With their main squad absent, the Italian team captain, Corrado Barazzutti, will likely rely on Camila Giorgi, Karin Knapp, Nastassja Burnett and Alice Matteucci. The official squad will be revealed on Wednesday.
“We decided to accept the request of our veterans.” Said Barazzutti.
Top ranked Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci successfully defended their Australian Open women’s doubles title several days back with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
