In light of her difficult 2012 and her injury ridden 2013 seasons, Maria Sharapova has admitted that she is “blessed” to have Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov by her side. The Russian superstar witnessed another career resurgence in 2012, when she won the French Open for the first time, allowing her to complete a Career Grand Slam. This was a bittersweet event as she was also going through relationship trouble with her former fiancé Sasha Vujacic and they eventually broke it off.
Now, with a mere few weeks ahead of the 2014 season, the former world No. 1 feels she is happy at this current stage of her life, mentioning that it is her life experience that makes her cherish her new beau.
“I had a challenging with going through a breakup while winning a Grand Slam,” she said in an interview with the New York Times. “So it’s nice. I’m in a nice place in my life definitely, and I think I’m much more grateful now for the things I have just because I feel I’ve experienced a lot, so if I’m able to come home and be happy with someone, it’s because I’ve learned from the past.”
The world no. 4 believes that the established boundaries between the two players, as well as their busy schedules and independent natures, have created the perfect combination to make this a successful relationship.
“It’s nice to see somebody that’s next to me that is building their own life and becoming their own individual, respecting me at what I’m doing, giving me my life but being a huge part of it. It’s a very difficult combination to find in any relationship, but I’ve been really blessed to have that.”
