Jordan Thompson earned a Wild Card spot in the Australian Open main draw with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1 win over Ben Mitchell in the final of the WC Playoffs. The match was a competitive one, but ultimately, Thompson was the fresher competitor in the fifth set as the former junior Wimbledon champion faded badly late in the match.
The World no. 318 reached the second round of last year’s Australian Open qualifying rounds before losing to American Ryan Sweeting. He is 1-1 in Melbourne and is now set to reach the main draw of the season-opening Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.
The 2014 Australian Open takes place between January 13-26 at Melbourne Park.
