Wayne Ferreira’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sergi Bruguera earlier today guaranteed that former World no. 1 John McEnroe will contest the Statoil Masters Legends final against Mats Wilander on Sunday. While McEnroe may have suffered a surprising defeat to Bruguera the previous day, Ferreira defeated the Spaniard 6-4, 6-4 earlier today, which means McEnroe, who had also defeated Ferreira, topped Group A based on sets won.
“When I last saw Wayne last night I wasn’t liking the look of his chances so I’m pleased he’s pulled that one out of the bag today,” said McEnroe. “I definitely owe Wayne dinner tonight that’s for sure.”
Seven time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander contested a doubles contest with Peter McNamara against his finals opponent John McEnroe and his partner Mansour Bahrami. Looking ahead at his upcoming match against fellow seven-time Grand Slam champion, the Swede is expecting a fantastic encounter.
“He’s probably seen everything I’ve got. I don’t think we have any secrets from one another so that should make for a good match.”
The two legendary athletes will meet Sunday afternoon at 12pm GMT at the Royal Albert Hall.
