The ASB Classic has lost one of its top seeds just a week ahead of the start of the tournament as World No. 25 Elena Vesnina has been forced out of the tournament with an ankle injury. The news was revealed by tournament officials earlier today.
While the loss of a seeded player is disappointing for the event, tournament officials admit that this is an opportunity to give a talented player a wildcard entry into the event. Germany’s Julia Goerges was expected to recieve the wild card entry but now that she has reached the main draw, they will be looking to award the WC to another deserving player.
“Now that Julia’s in on her own right, we’ve got an additional wildcard now that we can have a play with.”said Tournament organiser Karl Budge. “So it gives us a bit of scope to have someone join Andrea who we announced last week.”Article Continues Below Ad
One of the players expected to get the wild card is 15-year-old Ana Konjuh. The Croatian, who is ranked No. 256 in the world rankings, made waves in 2013 when she won the Australian Open junior women’s title and the US Open junior title, which lead her to the decision to play only professional events in 2014.
