After a variety of rumour began circulating a few weeks ago, the USTA has officially announced that the 2014 Davis Cup World Group first round clash between Great Britain and the USA will take place on outdoor clay at Petco Park in San Diego, California. The venue, which was built in 2004, is known as the home to the San Diego Padres baseball team.
It will certainly be a historic encounter as it marks the first time a Davis Cup tie takes place in an open air stadium in the United States, which is undoubtedly a memorable venue to host the Davis Cup’s oldest rivalry. The two nations first met in the competition 113 years ago in 1900 and will face off again for the first time in fourteen years. In that last encounter, Jim Courier toppled Greg Rusedski 8-6 in the fifth and final rubber on British soil in the first round of the World Group Stage.
World No. 4 Andy Murray led the British team into the World Group for the first time since 2008, but almost immediately went into surgery following the tie and is yet to announce his return to professional competition.
The tie is scheduled to take place between January 31 -February 2nd, 2014.
