Toni Nadal, coach and uncle to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, discussed the upcoming year for his nephew as well as their goals in the season. Nadal mentioned that their priority is to win the Australian Open, as that would place Rafa in league with Rod Laver as the only other player to win each of the Grand Slams twice.
“The challenge in 2014 will be to win Australia, because it would achieve something only Rod Laver did, which is twice winning the four [Grand Slams],” Toni Nadal said.
Toni had high praise for Serbian star Novak Djokovic, whom he says is a player that Rafa should emulate more. Nadal also mentioned that he considers it “outrageous” that his nephew has surpassed 11-time major winner Bjorn Borg. The Swede is a player that Toni placed on a pedestal, but is proud to see Nadal surpass that record with 13.
“I do not put Rafael on a pedestal because it’s my family, although I know that he is one of the best ever,”
Nadal has reached quarter-finals of the Australian Open in six of the past seven years, missing only 2013 due to injury. While he has twice reached the finals in Melbourne, he has only lifted the title once back in 2009.
