World No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka has announced that he will begin his 2014 season at the Chennai Open. This marks the sixth consecutive time that the Swiss No. 2 begins his season at the ATP 250 event, which takes place on the hard courts in Chennai, India.
“I am glad to say that Chennai Open 2014 will mark my sixth visit to Chennai to participate in a tournament I have grown to respect and love. As always, I am really looking forward to experiencing, once more, the excitement and support of the people,” Wawrinka said.
Wawrinka has had arguably a career-best season in 2013, having reached his first Grand Slam semi-final this year at the US Open (lost to Novak Djokovic), entered the top 10 and even reached the semi-finals of the Barclays World Tour Finals in his debut at the event.
“Wawrinka is a player adored by fans in Chennai and we are glad to announce that he will be seen in action this year as well.” Tamil Nadu Tennis Association President M A Alagappan said of the Swiss player. “He has had a fantastic playing year and we congratulate him on his stupendous performance at the ATP World Tour Finals.”
Wawrinka was crowned singles champion in 2011 and won the doubles title this year with partner Benoit Paire.
