The final of the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia was played on Sunday evening between top seeded and 14th ranked Simona Halep (Player Bio)and 19th ranked 4th seed Samantha Stosur (Player Bio). Both players were on court for around an hour and three quarters in their three set semi final wins – Stosur over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Halep over Ana Ivanovic. Stosur led the head to head stat 3-2, although the Romanian had won their two meetings earlier this season, in Cincinnati and more recently in Moscow, where Halep won in the final. Halep won five WTA titles during 2013, while her opponent had only won two.
The Aussie got the first set underway and quickly built up a 3-0 lead before Halep managed to hold her serve and get on the scoreboard. Even though Halep had a break point on Stosur’s serve in the ensuing game, the Aussie fought back to take the game and lead 4-1. Halep then held her serve to love to trail 2-4, but Stosur also held. The Romanian served at 2-5 to try to stay in the set but it was Stosur who got to another break to take the set at 6-2.
Both players held their opening games in the second set, follows by a break on each side of the net to get back on serve. Halep then broke again to lead 4-2 and went on to take the set at 6-2, forcing a decider.
The first break of serve in the third set came in the 5th game, when Halep got the better of Stosur and took a 3-2 lead. After holding on to her serves with one more break of serve, she utterly overpowered Stosur from both forehand and backhand wings, claiming her 6th title of the season – without losing a match in this championship.
