World No. 4 Maria Sharapova revealed the first half of her 2014 WTA Schedule, which includes her first tournament back in Brisbane, Australia. The tournament will act as a warm-up contest prior to arriving in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
The entries for the Brisbane International will be announced soon with the commitment of the two top-ranked female players, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, already guaranteed for the event. While Sharapova has entered two Brisbane International events prior to this one, she has never actually played a match on the court as she withdrew last year due to collarbone soreness, which was the closest she has gotten to actually playing.
While Sharapova has been out of competition since August due to a shoulder injury, she has managed to finish the year ranked within the top 5 for the seventh consecutive year.
Sharapova’s other scheduled tournaments this season include the Open GDF Suez, Indian Wells, Sony Open in Miami, Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome.
