Saturday afternoon saw the two semi final matches played at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria. First up on court were the 2nd seeded wildcard Ana Ivanovic and top seed Simona Halep. Ivanovic won her first round match against Tsvetana Pironkova for the loss of just two games and then beat Sam Stosur in three tough sets in her second match before getting the better of Elena Vesnina in a cliff hanging three sets. Halep had a perfect record going into this semi, with straight sets wins over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Alize Cornet and Elina Svitolina (who came in to replace the injured Maria Kirilenko). Ivanovic got through to the semis because she won one set against Vesnina. She started the semi and took the first set 6-2 in 43 minutes, which indicates that it was not as easy as the score suggests. Halep ran up a 4-0 lead in the second set before the Serb got a game, but it was her only one as the Romanian took the set at 6-1. The Serb went 3-0 up in the decider before Halep got a game and she took the next five in a row to take the set 6-3 and move into the final.
The second semi-final saw 4th seeded Sam Stosur, who had a win over Vesnina, a three set loss to Ivanovic and then a win against Tsvetana Pironkova under her belt. She had to win against the Bulgarian to secure her place in the semis, because if she lost, Elena Vesnina would make it through. Her opponent, 6th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, lost her first match to Simona Halep, beat Elina Svitolina in her second match and then got the better of 7th seeded Alize Cornet in the final round of the round robin part of this tournament. Stosur began and raced through the first set 6-1 in just 29 minutes. The first three games of the second set went with serve until Pavlyuchenkova got her first break and she went on to take the set at 6-1. In the decider Stosur went 4-1 and 5-2 up before booking her place in the final, taking the set 6-3.
