Chris Evert: There’s Something About Roger Federer Which Tugs at the Heartstrings

Roger Federer Wimbledon Champion

Legendary women’s competitor and ‘American Sweetheart’ Chris Evert has never hidden her adoration for 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. The American is an 18-time Grand Slam champion herself, but admits that she has never felt such fandom for any other competitor in tennis.

And she cannot even explain why.

“Why do I love him? I don’t know, I just love him.” Evert said. “There is something about Roger which just tugs at the heartstrings. I don’t know what it is, I can’t say exactly, but he gets to me. Maybe it’s because one of my sons idolises Roger, and I can see similarities between the two. It’s almost as though Roger could be my son.

I’ve been in this game for more than 40 years, and there has never been a player who has made me as emotional as Roger has, not even close. … This may sound strange, but his losses affect me much more than my own defeats. … And I haven’t really spent that time with the guy. I hardly know him. I’m not a stalker, I promise you.”

Of This *AGE* of Gentlemen Players - Roger had my heart through and through. Someone close to me (who had a computer at his desk). would telephone me to say ... *"Did you see Roger hit that shot? Awesome! How did he do that? (Usually a one handed back-hand;. cross- court, (at a ridiculous angle). Then Marcos Baghadtis  stool my heart for a short while (But could never holds it with his inconsistency - similarly  to Gael Monfils  Then RAFA made a serious assault & I thought *"NADAL is my boy! Now ~~ I think I have settled on Novak  'D' Joker - Djokovic ~~I expect 'D' Joker to be KING in my heart  for *"a L O N G   time!"
HOWEVER I still  like pretty much all  the others. I can not see why Loving Djokovic - of necessity means I must HATE  Roger or RAFA

The first time I watched Roger play tennis was at the French Open 2005 and I was 18 at the time. Since then I have been one of his die hard fans. As Chris Evert said there is just something about him that makes people connect with him and love him. As many, I go through all sorts of emotions when he plays. Saddeness, happiness, excitement etc. I guess I would stop watching men's tennis when Roger retires. It wouldn't be the same without him.

Chris Evert are on exactly the same page when it comes to Roger Federer.  I became a fan early in his career when he had the pony tail - don't know why - there is just that connection.  Roger has done so much for tennis!

I feel exactly the same way as Chris Evert.. I am a fan of Roger Federer thru and thru...I cry when he loses and I have never prayed as hard when I wanted him to win and I wish he would stay much more longer.  I don't know why I love him this much...only reason I can think of is he looks like my beloved nephew and I see my nephew playing when he plays.  Another reason could be the way he handles himself both professional and personal.
