Serbian star Ana Ivanovic (Player Bio) will look to take advantage of her final opportunity to secure an elusive first title of the season heading into the Istanbul WTA Championships next week, as she takes on Klara Zakopalova (Player Bio) in the second round of the Moscow Open. Check out the Ivanovic vs Zakopalova Head to Head.
Ivanovic reached her first final of the season last week in the Generali Ladies Open in Linz, where she did not drop a single set heading into her final against Angelique Kerber. Kerber had received wildcard entry after the draw had been set and entered the tournament as the top seed and toppled Ivanovic, who was hunting for her first title of the season, to legitimize her entry into the WTA Championships next week in Istanbul. The World No. 14 is 37-20 this year in singles competition and is still hunting for her first title before reaching the year-end championships. The Kremlin Cup represents her final opportunity to secure that elusive title.
Zakopalova advanced to the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kovinic. The World No. 34 has compiled an overall record of 26-24 and had some impressive performances this season, including a semifinal appearance in Bastad (where she lost to Serena Williams) and another semifinal in New Haven (loss to Petra Kvitova). While those have been strong performances, she has also had a string of winless tournaments that have forced her ranking down from No. 28 to her current ranking of No. 34.
This is the first professional encounter between Invanovic and Zakopalova although the had met in the qualification stage in Zurich nine years ago. Ivanovic picked up a relatively easy win over Klara that day, including a bagel opening set. While their second meeting is over nine years later, Ivanovic is currently the more successful of the two players and will certainly be a favourite heading into their contest tomorrow.
