An interesting quarter-final contest between Kirsten Flipkens (Bio) and Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro (Bio) takes place in Linz today afternoon. This marks their first ever encounter on the WTA tour although they had previously met twice in Challengers series. Check out the Flipkens v Suarez Navarro Head to Head.
Flipkens had a slow start to the tournament, dropping the first set to Donna Vekic before regrouping to win the following two sets 6-2, 6-2. The Belgian No. 1 had a stronger showing in her second round match as she defeated Camila Giorgi in straight sets, losing only three games in the process. This tournament marks her best performance since Toronto in August, where she reached the third round before losing to Serena Williams. She has since lost in the first round in the US Open, Cincinnati, Quebec and Beijing. The poor performances throughout the past couple of months dropped her six places in the WTA rankings to No. 19, where she currently resides. She has a 32-22 record this season and is hunting for her first title in 2013.
Fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro lost only five games in her 6-1, 6-4 win over Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina. She is participating in her seventh quarterfinal of the season and will be looking to top Flipkens for the first time on the WTA tour. The Spaniard is yet to drop a set heading into the quarterfinals and has compiled a 43-25 record this season.
This is their first meeting on the WTA tour and will likely be an intriguing clash of styles. Their previous two encounters were both in challengers events back in 2007-08, with each player besting the other on one occasion. Flipkens will be looking to end her season on a high note with strong showings in the finals few tournaments of the season.
