Generali Ladies Linz 2013, QF
Centre Court, Second Match
Angelique Kerber (Bio) continues her late charge for a spot in the Year End Championships and is fortunate to play the lowest ranked player remaining in the draw in home favourite Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (Bio). Check out the Kerber vs Mayr-Achleitner Head to Head.
A bizarre first set bagel against Monica Niculescu sprung the German into life with her dropping just four games in the following four sets in this tournament. Niculescu picked up three in the 0-6 6-1 6-2 first round and her fellow Romanian Alexandra Cadantu picked up just one as Kerber needed just 50 minutes in a 6-1 6-0 victory. Kerber served for the first set at 5-0 and could have had a double bagel if not for the momentary letdown.
Mayr-Achleitner had enough to take advantage of a collapse from Sorana Cirstea in round one while she defeated a lucky loser in Maryna Zanevska in the second round. Mayr-Achleitner served for the match in the second set but would end up losing a tiebreak and also dropped serve to open the third but fought back for a 6-1 6-7 6-4 victory.
It’s clear that Kerber will be a step up in class from the Austrian’s current opponents to date in the tournament and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Kerber deals with her less illustrious opponent in similar fashion to the opening two rounds.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber in straight sets
