Generali Ladies Linz 2013, R2
Centre Court, Fourth Match
Two former French Open champions face off in this round two clash from Linz. 2008 winner and third seed Ana Ivanovic (Player Profile) plays 2010 winner Francesca Schiavone (Player Profile). Ivanovic is a two time winner (2008,2010) at Linz and will be one of the favourites to take the title home this year too. Check out the Ivanovic vs Schiavone Head to Head.
Before the draw chaos from Linz after Kvitova pulling out of the tournament and Kerber being awarded a wildcard in the very last minute, Ivanovic had been given a kind draw as No.2 seed but the wildcard awarded to Kerber saw a reshuffle of the draw – something Ana wasn’t too happy about.
One of those things when you realise you’re powerless… No matter what they say! #linzdraw - @anaivanovic
Instead of being slated to play Monica Niculescu in the first round, she instead played one time US Open semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer. She defeated the Belgian with the minimum of fuss 6-2 6-4, breaking her opponent five times.
Meanwhile, Schiavone defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets 7-5 6-2 in a commanding victory. She was broken just once by the young Czech who was playing just her second indoor hard court match on the WTA Tour.
Despite the early drama, Ana still has a great chance of becoming the first three time winner at Linz. She had been controversially handed a wildcard to the year ending Tournament of Champions in Sofia despite not winning a tournament this year and this will be her best chance to qualify directly of her two final tournaments.
Her record against Schiavone is an impressive 4-0 with an additional win in Hopman Cup play. The last meeting was in 2012 with Ivanovic coming out a winner in straight sets in Dubai. Her pedigree indoors is shown by the five career titles on the surface although Schiavone was also capable in the past however the Italian lost her only two main draw matches in 2011/2012.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in straight sets
