WTA Championships 2013 Istanbul White Group
Jelena Jankovic (Player Profile) plays her first match of the WTA Championships 2013 in the middle match on Wednesday against World No.2 Victoria Azarenka (Player Profile). Check out the Azarenka vs Jankovic Head to Head.
Azarenka was far from her best in the opening match, needing to come from 2-5* down in the first set to beat Sara Errani in straight sets 7-6 6-2. After a 3 match losing streak, Azarenka began the match in same fashion she had ended her recent losses. However, she would fight back and once Errani suffered a calf injury in the second set, she had little trouble with the Italian reeling off four straight games to close out the match and get her WTA Championships off to a great start.
Jankovic’s excellent run to the Beijing final ensured her place in his event for the first time since 2010. The Serbian has found a new lease of life in her career with her title in Bogota was the first since Indian Wells in 2010 and she may well have had two more if she didn’t have the misfortune to be facing Serena Williams in both Charleston and Beijing.
Both players have not played an indoor match this year before this week but like Azarenka, Jankovic does have indoor pedigree with multiple titles in the past although the most recent one was in late 2008.
While on paper the head to head makes this look an even affair at 5-3 Azarenka, Jankovic has not won a match since 2009. In the four years since, Azarenka is 4-0 for the loss of just one set as both players careers headed in opposite directions. The most recent match in Cincy was where Jankovic led by a set before losing 4-6 6-3 6-2. Given Azarenka’s recent vulnerability, a three setter looks very possible.
Prediction: Victoria Azarenka in three sets
