Wednesday saw the last of the second round matches at the China Open completed, with the only seed to fall being14th seeded Ana Ivanovic (Player Profile), who lost a tight match against Polona Hercog (Player Profile), the 76th ranked Slovenian qualifier. Hercog’s serve stats were far better than her opponent’s and she got a single break of the Serb’s serve in each set to run out a 6-4 6-4 winner in just over an hour and a quarter. She will face Aga Radwanska in the third round. 3rd seed Aga Radwanska (Player Profile), who went into her match against the 40th ranked American Madison Keys (Player Profile) leading the head to head stat 2-0, took just an hour and a quarter to stroll to an easy 6-3 6-2 victory.
8th seed Jelena Jankovic (Player Profile)was taken to three sets in her match against the Kazakhstani qualifier and 80th ranked Galina Voskoboeva (Player Profile). The Serb led 6-3 3-1 before losing concentration and the second set 5-7. In the decider the Serb pulled her game together to take it 6-3, to set up a third round match up with 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.
Two unseeded players, Andrea Petkovic (Player Profile) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (Player Profile), battled for a place in the third round. Petkovic took out 2nd seed Victoria Azarenka in three sets in the first round, while Kuznetsova lost just two games in her first round match. Petkovic managed to continue her good form on her way back up the rankings after being off the tour for some time with injuries and, after dropping the first set 4-6, took the rest of the match 6-4 6-1. Her third round opponent will be Lucie Safarova.
