The third round of the WTA Beijing tournament sees an intriguing match-up between former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki (Player Info) and rising star Sloane Stephens (Player Info). The American will be looking for her first win over the Danish star after losing their other two encounters. Check out the Wozniacki vs Stephens Head to Head

Stephens announced her arrival on the scene earlier this year when she defeated World No. 1 Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The win signalled the rise of a new star in the women’s game and a potential rival for the top female star. While this is not quite the case yet, Sloane is certainly improving on a regular basis. Having finished 2012 ranked No. 38, she rose to No. 25 after the Australian Open and has gradually worked her way into the top 15. Although she is yet to win her first WTA title, she has reached the fourth round (or better) of every Grand Slam tournament this year, highlighting her overall improvements.

The World No. 13 defeated the top two Canadians players on the tour in Aleksandra Wozniak and Eugenie Bouchard. The win over Bouchard was a significant one as she had lost to the 19-year-old last week in Tokyo in an thrilling three-set encounter. Her third round match with Wozniacki is a more challenging one as she is yet to take a set of the Dane in professional competition.

23-year-old Caroline Wozniacki has not had a particularly memorable season. Her best performance of the year came during the Indian Wells tournament in March where she defeated Petrova, Kerber and Azarenka (withdrawal) prior to succumbing to Maria Sharapova in the final. She is yet to win her first title of the year and did not reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2008.

The World No. 8¬†holds a 34-21 record heading into her third round contest against Stephens. She last defeated the American in the quarterfinals of the New Haven tournament back in August. It is likely be Wozniacki’s match to win yet it will depend on whether Stephens is confident in her ability to overcome adversity. In all cases, this should be a fantastic match between two top stars on the tour.
