Stanislas Wawrinka (Profile) looks to confirm his place in next week’s ATP World Tour Finals in London, with Nicolas Almagro (Profile) next up for the Swiss. It is almost a certainty that Wawrinka qualifies but it cannot be confirmed until he makes the semi finals or Milos Raonic loses this week. Check out the Wawrinka v Almagro Head to Head.
His hopes took a slight setback in Basel, where he was defeated by Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the opening round thanks to an awfully tame performance. He ensured the same didn’t happen this week, winning in three sets against Feliciano Lopez. It was a match low on breaks with just one settling each set. Thankfully for Wawrinka, it was he who struck first in the deciding set as he broke to love at the start of the third. It came in a run of 11 straight points to start the set and he never looked back from there, losing just four more points on serve to close out the 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory.
Almagro had a fairly easy time against Ivan Dodig, not facing a single break point in the 6-4 6-4 victory over the Croatian. It was an impressive performance as he bounced back from his 14th consecutive defeat against David Ferrer in the Valencia semi finals.
Although these two have met 9 times before, the majority of these meetings have been on clay including a straight sets win for Wawrinka in Buenos Aires this year. Almagro has the better indoor form and can make it hard for the Swiss.
Prediction: Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets
