WTA Tournament of Champions 2013 – Serdika Group
Armeec Arena, Second Match
Simona Halep (Player Bio) can virtually secure her place in the semi finals in the Tournament of Champions with a victory in her second round robin match against Alize Cornet (Player Bio). Check out the Halep v Cornet Head to Head.
Halep’s run in the second half of the year has been outstanding with her five titles only being bettered by one Serena Williams in 2013. The last of these was in Moscow with the straight sets victory over Samantha Stosur making it four different surfaces that the Romanian has won an event on this year.
After defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Moscow semi-final, Halep repeated the trick on the opening day of this event with another straight sets win over the Russian. Halep broke Pavlyuchenkova’s serve five times and was always in control of the match after securing her second break in the first set for a *4-3 lead.
Meanwhile, Cornet also is 1-0 this week but not quite in the way she would have hoped. Maria Kirilenko‘s retirement at 0-5 down in the first means that Kirilenko is now out of the tournament with Elina Svitolina replacing her in the draw. Cornet sealed her place in the event a long time back by winning Strasbourg just before the French Open. Her indoor form is so-so, going 2-2 this year. She went 1-1 against Tournament of Champions participants this year, defeating Svitolina in Moscow before losing to Stosur in the next round.
With Halep on this run of form, she looks likely to emerge victorious here as she further looks to push ever closer to the top 10, something that almost seems a certainty next year.
Prediction: Simona Halep in straight sets
