Sunday afternoon saw the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, a Premier Level event marking the last tournament before the season ending championship to be held in Istanbul next week. Fighting for the title were the 7th seeded Aussie Samantha Stosur (Player Bio) and the 5th seeded Romanian, Simona Halep (Player Bio).
The first set went all the way to a tie breaker, as neither played managed to outplay the other throughout the set. The famed Stosur kick serve was not on song, as she served five double faults to three aces and got in just 53% of her first serves in, while Halep won a good many of her points on her second serve. Halep won the breaker 7-1, even though Stosur had managed to save eleven out of twelve break points against her during the set.
Stosur started the second set and broke in the first game, but Halep returned the compliment to get back on serve. She broke again to lead 3-1 and then raced away, allowing Stosur just one more game in the set to take it 6-2 for a total time on court of less than one and three quarter hours. This was Halep’s fifth final of the 2013 season and her fifth title, having also lifted the winner’s trophy in Nürnberg in Germany, ‘s-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands, Budapest and New Haven in the United States.
