The first semi final was played between 9th seed Petra Kvitova and 8th seed Jelena Jankovic in Beijing on Saturday afternoon. Both had played long three setters in the quarters – with Jankovic being on court five minutes longer than Kvitova. Kvitova got the early break to go 3-1 up in the first set, but the Serb broke back with three games in a row to lead 4-3. At 5-4 Jankovic served for the set, but the Czech broke to level at 5-5. Jankovic served for the set again at 6-5 but Kvitova broke again to force a breaker. Jankovic again led in the breaker, but Kvitova broke back to level at 6-6 and eventually took it at 9-7 in a set that lasted over an hour. In the second set Jankovic raced to a 5-0 lead with much better serve stats, allowed Kvitova one game and wrapped up the set 6-1. The first two games of the decider went with serve before Jankovic took the next five games in a row to wrap up the set 6-1 and book her place in the final.
In the second semi top seed Serena Williams took on 3rd seed Agnieszka Radwanska. Williams led Caroline Wozniacki 6-0 4-0 in her quarter final match before the Dane really fought back, while Radwanska went 5-0 up against Angelique Kerber before the German also fought back to eventually take the first set to a breaker. In the semi, Serena raced through the first set with the loss of just two games against Aga; and repeated the feat in the second set, to wrap up her 73rd victory of the season in an hour and twelve minutes to move smoothly into the final.
