WTA Tournament of Champions 2013 – Group Sredets
Armeec Arena, 5pm Local
With Tsvetana Pironkova seen as a heavy underdog to qualify from the Sredets group in this tournament, this match will go a long way to determining who qualifies for the semi final with Ana Ivanovic a heavy favourite to progress.
Samantha Stosur (Player Bio) will play her first match of the tournament against Russia’s Elena Vesnina (Player Bio), one of a number of Russians whose decision to play this tournament instead of this weekend’s Fed Cup final has created controversy. Check out the Stosur v Vesnina Head to Head.
After back to back losses to Lucie Safarova, Stosur ended her season in great fashion making the finals in Osaka and Moscow. She came from a set down to defeat Eugenie Bouchard but would be unable to repeat the trick in Russia, losing to fellow Tournament of Champions competitor Simona Halep in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Vesnina’s form has been a little less impressive with just one win in her last five matches. Losing to Serena Williams is understandable but she was also on the wrong end of matches against Karin Knapp and Andrea Petkovic in the past few weeks. She would also be part of the losing finalists in the four team doubles event at the Year End Champions last week in Istanbul.
Vesnina may lead the head to head 2-1 but Stosur has shown a marked improvement in the last few weeks and has been serving very well. Alongside the singles final in Moscow, Stosur was also part of the winning doubles team at the event winning in a match tiebreaker in the third set with Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Prediction: Samantha Stosur in straight sets
