Play on Day 3 of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul started with the match between 4th seeded Na Li (Player Profile) and 7th seeded Jelena Jankovic (Player Profile) who are playing in the White Group. In one of the closest head to head stats of all the players in this tournament, Li led Jankovic 5-4. Their last meeting was at the US Open this year where Li demolished Jankovic 6-3 6-0, but the Serb won on clay in Rome 7-6 7-5 earlier in the season. Both won a title this season – Jankovic won in Bogota while Li won in Shenzhen In her first match, Li beat Sara Errani, while Jankovic had a good win against Vika Azarenka.
Jankovic started proceedings but Li broke immediately and ran away with the first three games. With Li at 40-0 on her serve for 4-0, Jankovic suddenly got into the contest and took the next three games in a row to level. Li then held and broke for 5-3 and then served out for the set which she took at 6-3 in forty two minutes.
The Serbian player began the second set and won the first two games. Li got on the scoreboard and the next two games went with serve. Jankovic then broke and took another two games, leaving Li to serve to stay in the set, but the Serb broke yet again to seal the set at 6-2.
Jankovic got the third set underway and the first two games went with serve. Li broke in the third game and the next two games again went with serve before Jankevic broke to level. Li took the next two games and forced Jankovic to serve to stay in the match. Li got the final break to take the set at 6-3 to close the match for two wins to Jankevic’s one win and one loss.
